About Us
Gontse Mai founded Oh Mai Catering in 2022, driven by a deep-rooted love for food and hospitality shaped by classical training. For her, catering isn’t a trend or a side project—rather, it’s a craft refined through years of formal education, professional kitchen experience, and family influence.
Gontse graduated with Merit from Prue Leith Chef’s Academy in 2012, before going on to build her career in some of Johannesburg’s most respected culinary environments. Her experience spans five-star hotels such as Radisson Blu and The Westcliff, as well as large-scale operational catering at Eatfresh, where she gained invaluable insight into high-volume, high-standard service.
Her passion for mentorship later brought her back to Prue Leith Chef’s Academy, this time as a lecturer, helping shape and train the next generation of chefs. Gontse has also represented South Africa as part of the South African Junior Culinary Team, and holds a Trade Test for Artisan Qualification, grounding her expertise firmly in professional and industry-recognized standards.
A Foundation Built on Food
Food has always been part of Gontse’s life. She grew up in a household where her mother ran an events and catering business, making the rhythm of kitchens, service, and events familiar from an early age. That foundation—combined with formal culinary education and real-world experience—defines how Oh Mai Catering operates today.
Behind the Scenes
Jin oversees the technical and operational aspects of the business, ensuring systems, processes, and the overall client experience run smoothly. As a Prue Leith graduate, Jin brings both culinary insight and strong operational structure to Oh Mai Catering.
Alongside this, his Chinese heritage adds another dimension to the brand, allowing the team to create Asian–Western fusion dishes that are authentic, balanced, and thoughtfully executed. Additionally, his experience at respected establishments such as The Westcliff and 54 on Bath has further strengthened his understanding of professional kitchen environments.
Our Kitchen Team
Our kitchen is led alongside Chichi, our Sous Chef, who trained and worked at elite establishments including The Saxon and The Westcliff, where she and Gontse first crossed paths. With experience across multiple high-end kitchens, Chichi brings precision, calm leadership, and a refined palate to every service.
